Conscientious Knights player Ben Cross will make a significant contribution to the lives of men and women in the Hunter region on Thursday 4th November.
Ben Cross will present local charities, the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF) and Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance (HPCA) the funds raised in his ‘Cross Runs for Your Life’ campaign. During the 2010 Rugby League season, Ben Cross invited the community to sponsor his incisive runs by pledging a certain amount per metre gained during games with the Newcastle Knights. He was inspired to raise money and awareness after family and friends were affected by prostate and breast cancer and chose to support two Hunter charities that were committed to helping local people.
The Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance and Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation worked together to assist Ben’s campaign and will acknowledge his support and commitment to local people.
HPCA Executive Marketing Manager, Leigh Maughan thinks it is marvellous that two charities with a strictly local focus have been invited to participate in Cross’ campaign.
“The fact is Prostate Cancer and Breast Cancer affect too many men and women in our community, and unfortunately Ben Cross has experienced this first hand. As all funds raised by the HBCF and HPCA stay in the Hunter region, Ben is directly helping our families,” said Leigh Maughan.
HPCA provides a free information and counselling service for sufferers and survivors of the disease in our area. HPCA is unique in that it is the only organisation that offers a free counselling service, with qualified Counsellors available to men and their families who are affected by prostate cancer.
Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation Vice President, Meg Purser, said that the funds raised would be used directly to support local women and men with breast cancer.
“Ben’s commitment to helping two relatively small, hard working local organisations throughout 2010 has provided both organisations with a great deal of awareness and financial support. On behalf of the people of the Hunter we are most grateful to Ben and his family for their support,” she said.
The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation provides assistance to more than 650 local people every year by getting them to and from treatment appointments, helping out with house cleaning and lawn maintenance, providing post operative comfort cushions and giving scholarships to young people whose parents have been affected by breast cancer.
In Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, the mortality rate of prostate cancer is up to 38% higher than the Australian average. With cooperation from generous people like Ben, will continue to see improvements in survival from prostate and breast cancer in our community.
